1. Potassium iodide in feed additives

Iodine is a key component of thyroid hormone and is essential for the basal metabolism and growth and development of livestock and poultry. Iodine deficiency can lead to goiter and decreased basal metabolic rate, seriously affecting the health and production performance of livestock and poultry. Potassium iodide, as an effective iodine source, is often added to feed to meet the iodine needs of high-yielding dairy cows and laying hens, and to increase milk production and egg production rates. At the same time, potassium iodide can also enhance the anti-stress ability of livestock and poultry, promote growth and development, and improve feed utilization. Usually, the amount of potassium iodide added to the feed is several PPM, and ferric citrate and calcium stearate are added as protective agents to improve its stability.

2. Anti-radiation effect

Potassium iodide has a significant effect in nuclear radiation protection. Especially around nuclear power plants, when radiation leaks occur, residents take iodine tablets (mainly potassium iodide) to saturate the thyroid gland and reduce the absorption of radioactive iodine-131, thereby effectively preventing radioactive damage. However, iodine tablets must be taken within 4 hours after radiation exposure and cannot defend against other types of radioactive isotopes.
