Methyl red is a red organic acid. Organic compounds are compounds containing carbon, found in living things. Methyl red is an acid–base indicator, so great for scientists. In other words, it can inform us if something is acidic (sour) or not. This is commonly used in microbiology to determine whether specific bacteria can produce acid. Methyl red helps scientists to distinguish between various types of microorganisms. Examples include Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes and Klebsiella pneumoniae. 


In addition to its functions in the FSCI field of microbiology, methyl red is combined with other substances to form a dye. Its use in textile mills (places where Textiles are made) comes from its ability to dye materials in various shades of red. Methyl red is another example beneficial during food production. It has multiple roles, one of the roles as pH indicator, to help the detection of changes in acidity (or value of compared with the opposite of acidity, alkalinity) of foods. The Chemistry behind Methyl Red Dye

Methyl red is a composition of two chemicals: dimethyl aniline and nitrous acid. Mix these together and they yield a red-colored powder. This powder is soluble in water and other liquids. Scientists who study bacteria are very interested in these results because they can use them to categorize bacteria into groups based on behavior.
