Isotiazolinona: Biocida de amplio espectro para la industria y productos de uso diario.

Biocida de isotiazolinona de amplio espectro para la industria y productos de uso diario.

Isothiazolinone is not one single preservative. It is a family of antimicrobial chemicals that includes POCO, MIT, CMIT, OIT y DCOIT, as well as common blends such as CMIT/MIT.

These active ingredients are used to control bacteria, yeast, mold and other microorganisms in water-based formulations and finished materials. However, they are not interchangeable. Some isothiazolinones are mainly used for in-can preservation, while others are better suited to dry-film protection. Their stability, antimicrobial activity, solubility and approved uses also differ.

For this reason, selecting an isothiazolinone should start with the material that needs protection rather than simply looking for a “broad-spectrum biocide.”

Main Types of Isothiazolinone

TipoN.º CAS.Common RoleTypical Applications
POCO2634-33-5In-can preservativeWater-based coatings, polymer dispersions, adhesives, pigment slurries, construction materials, cleaners, metalworking fluids
MIT2682-20-4Preservative for aqueous formulationsIndustrial formulations and permitted consumer products
CMIT/MIT55965-84-9Fast-acting in-can preservativePaints, polymer emulsions, adhesives, cleaners, construction materials and other water-based formulations
OIT26530-20-1Mainly fungal and dry-film protectionCoatings, plasters, wood coatings and other materials exposed to fungal growth
DCOIT64359-81-5Fungicidal and algaecidal protectionMarine, exterior and other coating systems requiring surface protection

The important difference is therefore not simply which product has the strongest antimicrobial activity. The first question is where microbial protection is required.

In-Can Preservation: BIT, MIT and CMIT/MIT

Water-based products can support microbial growth during production, storage and transportation. Paints, polymer emulsions, adhesives, pigment pastes, mineral slurries, concrete additives and cleaning formulations are common examples.

In these systems, isothiazolinones are added mainly to protect the product inside the container before use.

POCO

1,2-Benzisotiazolin-3-ona (BIT) is widely used for industrial preservation.

BIT preservatives are used in water-based coatings, polymer dispersions, plasters, synthetic adhesives, pigment slurries, concrete additives, cleaners and detergents. BIT is also used in some metalworking fluid systems.

BIT is particularly useful where formulators need an industrial preservative with good stability and low volatility. Foconsci ‘s  BIT products are available as aqueous dispersions, alkaline solutions and other formulated grades.

BIT is often combined with other active ingredients when broader or faster antimicrobial control is required.

CMIT/MIT

CMIT/MIT combines 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (CMIT) with 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (MIT). Our CMIT/MIT form uses a CMIT:MIT ratio of approximately 3:1.

It is widely used for preservation of aqueous industrial formulations.

Compared with relying on BIT alone, CMIT/MIT is often selected where rapid bacterial control is important.

Typical applications include:

  • water-based paints and coatings;
  • polymer emulsions;
  • adhesives and sealants;
  • construction chemicals;
  • cleaners and detergents;
  • mineral slurries;
  • metalworking fluids.

Dry-Film Protection: OIT and DCOIT

Preserving a liquid paint in its container and protecting the coating after it dries are two different jobs.

Once a coating, plaster or other material is exposed to moisture and the outdoor environment, mold, fungi and algae can grow on its surface. In these applications, formulators normally require an active ingredient that remains effective in the finished material.

Aquí es donde OIT and DCOIT become more relevant.

OIT

2-Octyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one (OIT) is strongly associated with fungal protection.

It is used in preservative systems for paints, exterior coatings, plasters, wood coatings, adhesives and other materials where fungal growth on the finished surface is a concern.

Commercial dry-film preservative systems frequently use OIT alone or combine it with other fungicides to broaden protection.

DCOIT

4,5-Dichloro-2-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (DCOIT) is another hydrophobic isothiazolinone used where protection against fungi and algae is required.

It is especially associated with coating and antifouling applications. Its application profile therefore differs significantly from conventional BIT or CMIT/MIT in-can preservatives.

The distinction can be simplified as:

BIT / MIT / CMIT-MIT → mainly protect the formulation.

OIT / DCOIT → mainly protect the finished material or coating surface.

The exact choice still depends on the formulation and local regulatory approval.

Why Isothiazolinones Are Often Used as Blends

Commercial preservatives do not always rely on one active ingredient.

For example, BIT can be combined with MIT or CMIT/MIT. BIT/OIT combinations are also available for water-based paints, coatings, polymer emulsions, pigment pastes and adhesives.

The reason is practical: one active ingredient may provide strong bacterial control while another improves fungal protection or changes the speed and duration of preservation.

This allows formulators to match the preservative system to the actual contamination risk instead of increasing the amount of a single active ingredient.

Where Are Isothiazolinones Commonly Used?

The application range is broad because many industrial products contain both water and organic components that can support microbial growth.

Pinturas, recubrimientos y tintas

BIT, MIT and CMIT/MIT can be used for in-can preservation of water-based formulations.

OIT and DCOIT are more closely associated with protection against fungal or algal growth on finished coatings.

A coating manufacturer may therefore use different preservation chemistry for the wet paint and the final dry film.

Adhesives and Polymer Emulsions

Synthetic adhesives, latexes and polymer dispersions can become contaminated during manufacturing or storage.

BIT and CMIT/MIT-based preservative systems are commonly used in these aqueous materials. BIT/MIT and BIT/OIT blends are also available for applications requiring a different antimicrobial spectrum.

Productos químicos para la construcción

Water-based plasters, concrete admixtures, mineral slurries and similar construction formulations can require in-can preservation.

BIT and CMIT/MIT-based systems are commonly supplied for these applications. Dry-film fungicides may be required separately when the finished material needs surface protection.

Cleaners and Detergents

BIT and other permitted isothiazolinone preservatives can protect suitable water-based cleaning formulations during storage.

The preservative must be selected according to the formulation and the regulations of the target market.

Fluidos para el trabajo de metales

Water-miscible metalworking fluids are another established industrial application for isothiazolinone preservatives. BIT and formulated isothiazolinone systems are available for controlling microbial contamination in these systems.

What About Personal Care Products?

The use of isothiazolinones in cosmetics and personal care products requires much more care than general industrial preservation.

Their permitted use depends on the country or region, product type and active ingredient.

For example, under current EU cosmetic rules, MIT and CMIT/MIT are restricted to rinse-off cosmetic products at specified maximum concentrations. They should therefore not be treated as general-purpose preservatives for all shampoos, skin-care products, wipes or other personal care formulations.

For products intended for consumer or personal care applications, formulators should first confirm the current regulations in the destination market.

How to Choose Between BIT, CMIT/MIT, OIT and DCOIT

The product name alone does not determine the right preservative.

Start with four practical questions:

What needs protection?
A liquid formulation during storage and a dried exterior coating require different preservative systems.

Which microorganisms are the main problem?
Bacterial contamination, yeast, mold and algae do not always require the same active ingredient.

What is the formulation environment?
Water content, pH, temperature, surfactants, reducing agents and other formulation components can affect preservative performance.

Where will the finished product be sold?
Approved active ingredients and maximum use levels vary by country, region and application.

For many aqueous industrial formulations, BIT or CMIT/MIT are common starting points. Where fungal protection of a finished coating or material is the main requirement, OIT or DCOIT may be more relevant.

In practice, commercial preservative systems often combine several active ingredients when one chemistry cannot provide the required balance of bacterial control, fungal protection, stability and service life.
