Chemical plants and silica cat litter: full chain advantages from raw materials to finished products

Zaozhuang, Shandong Province, is now one of China’s major production bases for silica gel cat litter. The reason is closely connected to the local silica industry.
Silica gel cat litter does not start with pet products. Its production is built on sodium silicate and silica gel manufacturing. These materials have long been used for moisture adsorption and other industrial applications.
Foconsci started chemical production in Zaozhuang in 2008, initially focusing on sodium silicate and inorganic silica materials. As silica gel products expanded into overseas markets, we also found that silica-based absorbent materials were being used as pet bedding in Europe and North America.
In 2014, we established a dedicated silica gel cat litter production base. This extended our existing silica material business from sodium silicate and silica gel into a finished pet product.
Today, this connection between chemical raw materials and cat litter manufacturing has become an important part of the silica gel cat litter industry in Zaozhuang.

Silica Gel Cat Litter Starts with the Silica Supply Chain
The main material in crystal cat litter is porous silica gel.
In industrial production, silica gel is commonly made from sodium silicate. The material then goes through gel formation, aging, washing, drying, sizing and other processing steps before becoming the crystal particles used in cat litter.
This means that silica gel cat litter is closely connected with the upstream silicate industry.
For a manufacturer already working with sodium silicate and silica gel, cat litter is therefore not an unrelated consumer product. It is another application of the same silica material system.
Our silica-related production covers:
- Sodium silicate
- Silica gel desiccants
- Crystal silica gel cat litter
- Health monitoring crystal cat litter
This gives us experience with the material before it reaches the final cat litter production line.
For readers who want to see the individual manufacturing stages, our Silica Gel Cat Litter Production Process article explains the route from sodium silicate to finished crystal particles in more detail.

What Does an Integrated Supply Chain Mean for Cat Litter Buyers?
For an importer or private label buyer, the important question is not simply whether a supplier makes its own silica gel.
The important question is what this changes in the finished product.
More Control Over the Starting Material
The performance of crystal cat litter depends heavily on the silica gel used to make it.
Changes in the raw silica gel can affect water absorption, particle strength, dust generation and the amount of broken material produced during transportation.
Working from our own silica material system gives us more control over the material entering the cat litter line instead of treating the silica gel as an unknown purchased input.
This becomes more important for repeat orders. A buyer normally needs the second, fifth and tenth containers to remain close to the approved sample.
Particle Size Can Be Produced for Different Markets
Crystal cat litter is not sold in one universal particle size.
Some customers prefer larger crystals, while others require smaller or mixed particles. Particle size also affects the appearance of the finished product, packing density and the amount of fine material in the bag.
Our production lines include screening and grading so that different particle ranges can be prepared according to the product specification.
For private label projects, the required particle range should be confirmed before mass production rather than selected only by appearance.
Dust and Broken Particles Need to Be Controlled Before Packing
Dust is one of the easiest differences to notice between silica gel cat litter products.
It can come from small particles left after screening or from crystals breaking during production, packing and transportation.
For export products, this cannot be judged only when the cat litter leaves the production line. Particle strength also matters because products may remain in bags, cartons and containers for weeks before reaching the customer.
Screening, particle strength and packing therefore need to be considered together.
Raw Material Supply and Finished Product Planning Are Connected
Cat litter importers often purchase by container rather than by individual bags.
At this scale, raw material availability, production scheduling, packaging materials and container loading all affect delivery.
An integrated silica supply chain reduces dependence on purchasing finished silica gel from multiple outside suppliers. It also makes it easier to coordinate raw material preparation with cat litter production.
For customers with regular container orders, this is more useful than simply having a large nominal production capacity.

From Standard Crystal Cat Litter to Private Label Products
Different markets sell silica gel cat litter in different ways.
Some customers need a simple transparent crystal product in bulk packaging. Others require retail bags with selected particle sizes, added colored particles, fragrance or their own brand design.
We therefore treat the cat litter itself and the retail package as two separate parts of a private label project.
Typical options can include:
- Regular crystal silica cat litter
- Fine-particle crystal cat litter
- Different particle size ranges
- Colored crystal combinations
- Fragrance options
- Retail bag customization
- Carton and outer packaging
- OEM and private label production
For a new project, it is usually better to confirm the cat litter specification first and finalize package design afterward.
Changing both the product and packaging at the same time makes sample evaluation more difficult.
Functional Crystal Cat Litter Is Another Development of Silica Materials
Silica gel cat litter is also moving beyond basic moisture absorption.
One example is crystal litter with visible urine pH trend indication.
Indicator materials can be incorporated into selected particles so that changes in urine conditions produce a visible color response. This creates a functional cat litter product while keeping silica gel as the main absorbent material.
This type of product requires more control than simply adding colored particles to standard crystal litter. The indicator system, particle distribution and finished product appearance all need to remain consistent between batches.
We have also developed Health Monitoring Crystal Cat Litter for buyers looking for this type of differentiated product.

Why Zaozhuang Matters in the Silica Gel Cat Litter Industry
The growth of silica gel cat litter in Zaozhuang did not happen independently from the local chemical industry.
The city already had a base in silicate and silica gel manufacturing. Local manufacturers then extended these materials into desiccants, adsorbents and pet products.
This industrial base has continued to grow.
Zaozhuang has become one of the world’s major silica gel cat litter production areas, with products exported to markets across Europe, North America, Asia and other regions.
For overseas buyers, this concentration has a practical benefit. The region brings together silica raw materials, cat litter production, packaging, export handling and related manufacturing experience.
It is similar to other industrial clusters in China: the advantage comes not only from one factory, but from the supply chain surrounding the factory.
What Should You Confirm Before Buying Silica Gel Cat Litter?
Price per ton should not be the only point used to compare suppliers.
Before placing a bulk or private label order, buyers should confirm several product details:
Particle size
Ask for the required size range instead of relying only on product photos.
Fine powder and dust
Check the amount of fines in the sample and whether crystals break easily after handling.
Water absorption
Compare samples under the same test conditions. Different test methods can produce different numbers.
Moisture before packing
Excess moisture reduces the remaining adsorption capacity of the finished cat litter.
Particle strength
This becomes especially important for long-distance sea freight.
Bag specification
Confirm bag material, net weight, sealing method and retail packaging before mass production.
Private label requirements
Color, fragrance, artwork, carton size and pallet requirements should be confirmed separately from the basic cat litter specification.
Container quantity
Ask about actual loading quantity according to the selected bag and carton configuration, rather than estimating only from product density.
A physical sample remains one of the most useful steps before the first commercial order.
From Sodium Silicate to Finished Crystal Cat Litter
Foconsci’s silica gel cat litter business developed from our earlier work with sodium silicate and inorganic silica materials.
That history matters because crystal cat litter is itself an extension of silica material manufacturing.
Instead of separating raw material production from finished cat litter, we connect the two sides of the supply chain. This gives us better control over raw material selection, particle processing, product specification and production planning.
For wholesalers, distributors and private label brands, the result is not simply “factory direct” supply. It is a silica gel cat litter supply chain that starts before the cat litter production line.
