What is Bismuth Trioxide (Bi2O3)
Bismuth Trioxide (Bi2O3) is a pale yellow to yellow powder used in glass, ceramics, electronic materials and catalyst production. It is also an important raw material for producing other bismuth compounds.
In glass frits and ceramic glazes, Bi2O3 works as a lead-free flux. It helps the raw materials melt and flow during firing. This can lower the firing temperature and improve surface gloss.
Bi2O3 is also used in zinc oxide varistors and other electronic ceramics. It supports sintering and helps form the grain-boundary phase that controls electrical performance.
Foconsci supplies standard 99.9% Bismuth Trioxide powder. Fine-particle and higher-purity grades are suitable for customers with tighter ceramic or electronic-material requirements.

Bismuth Trioxide (Bi2O3) Applications
Glass Frits and Ceramics
Bismuth trioxide (Bi2O3) is used as a lead-free flux in glass frits, ceramic glazes and specialty glass. It helps the formula melt at a lower temperature and improves melt flow during firing. This supports a smooth, glossy surface and can reduce bubbles in the fired layer.
Bi2O3 can replace lead oxide in suitable formulas, but it is not a direct one-for-one replacement.
Electronic Ceramics
Bi2O3 is added to zinc oxide varistors, ceramic capacitors and ferrite materials. In ZnO varistors, it helps form the grain-boundary phase during sintering.
Catalysts and Bismuth Compounds
Bi2O3 is used as a catalyst or catalyst raw material in selected chemical processes. It is also used to produce bismuth salts and compounds such as bismuth vanadate, bismuth tungstate and bismuth germanate.
Biomedicine and X-ray blocking materials
Bismuth trioxide features excellent biocompatibility. It is widely used as an X‑ray radiopacifier in dental root‑canal sealers and MTA pulp‑repair materials.
Owing to bismuth’s high atomic number (Z=83), its X‑ray attenuation performance is close to lead. As a low‑toxic lead‑free alternative, it serves as a promising filler for X‑ray protective clothing and nuclear‑medical shielding equipment. Modified nano‑sized Bi2O3 also shows great research potential for CT contrast‑imaging applications.
Packaging and Storage
Standard packaging: 1 kg aluminum foil bag and 25 kg fiber drum.
Store Bismuth Trioxide in a dry and ventilated warehouse. Keep the package tightly closed to prevent moisture and outside contamination.
