Synonymous Names: Bismuth(III) Oxyiodide; Bismuth(III) Iodide Oxide; Bismuth Subiodide; Bismuthyl Iodide

CAS No.: 7787-63-5

Molecular Formula: BiOI

Molecular Weight: 351.88 g/mol

EINECS No.: 232-126-9

Purity: ≥98.0%

Bismuth Oxyiodide CAS 7787-63-5 is a reddish-brown semiconductor powder used in photocatalyst and functional material research.

Its band gap is about 1.7–1.9 eV. BiOI absorbs visible light more easily than many wide-band-gap photocatalysts.

Bismuth Oxyiodide can be tested alone for the breakdown of organic pollutants. It is also used to prepare composite photocatalysts. Combining BiOI with another semiconductor or carbon material can improve charge separation and reduce the limits of pure BiOI.

Bismuth Oxyiodide Applications

Visible-Light Photocatalyst Development

Bismuth Oxyiodide is used in research on the photocatalytic breakdown of dyes, antibiotics, phenols and other organic pollutants.

Composite and Heterojunction Photocatalysts

Pure BiOI absorbs visible light well, but its charge transport and redox ability can limit performance. For this reason, it is often combined with materials such as BiOCl, BiOBr, TiO₂, graphitic carbon nitride or carbon-based materials.

Optoelectronic and Solar Material Research

Bismuth Oxyiodide is studied as a light-absorbing material for solar cells, photodetectors, X-ray detectors and photoelectrochemical sensors. (Tetragonal BiOI thin films can remain stable in air and work as the absorber layer in all-inorganic solar cells)

Packaging and Storage

Packaging: 1 kg sealed container or 25 kg fiber drum with inner liner

Store Bismuth Oxyiodide at room temperature in a dry and ventilated area. Keep the container tightly closed and away from strong oxidizing agents.
